NACC Spectrum Art Club's mural, A Tale of Two Mountains, pays tribute to the connection between Mentone and NACC. The composition features Sand Mountain and Lookout Mountain rising from the pages of an open book. The NACC Tom Bevill Lyceum and Mentone’s Wildflower Café add an architectural flair. The heart of the mural is Mustang, NACC’s mascot, and Roscoe, the beloved campus dog, symbolizing friendship and shared community.

Make Your Mark on Mentone began in 2024 as a way to encourage the community to appreciate the artistry of chalk. Last year we invited five artists known for their chalk art works to come to Mentone and create a work of art on a board that was built specifically for that purpose near the Mentone Inn. (Click here to see the artists and works.)
“Incorporating local artists into public art projects is a powerful tool for community development, fostering shared values, and enhancing social cohesion,” says sculptor and LRAC board member Deedee Morrison. “When our community engages local artists, we tap into the heart and soul of our own cultural landscape, ensuring that the art reflects the community’s identity, history, and aspirations. This inclusion not only validates the artists’ work, making them feel recognized and valued, but it also strengthens the bond between community members as they see their stories and experiences mirrored in public spaces.”
Initially conceived as a temporary installation, the Make Your Mark project has morphed into a permanent display. The project was so well received that we decided to keep inviting artists to create their inspirations on the board. LRAC renovated the stage near Mentone Inn to accommodate a permanent installation and now offer opportunities for other artists to make their mark on Mentone.
