Vine to Art: Kudzu Sphere Workshop

Discover the art of transforming an everyday invasive vine into a beautiful, functional work piece. In this hands-on workshop, participants will learn how to turn kudzu, a fast-growing invasive Southern vine, into a unique kudzu sphere. Using whole or split vines, makers will learn techniques for shaping and weaving the vines into round, hollow spheres that can be used as rustic home décor, hanging globe-style light fixtures, or as the foundation for other basketry projects.

Through her workshops, community demonstrations, and evolving body of work, Kudzu Mama has become known for blending artistry and ecology, encouraging others to see abundance and creative possibilities in the landscapes around them.

About the Instructor:
Beth Phillips, known throughout the Southeast as Kudzu Mama, is an artist, educator, and community craft advocate who for the past 20 years has been transforming one of the South’s most notorious invasive plants into objects of beauty and purpose. Her work centers on the creative potential of kudzu through harvesting, processing, and weaving the vine into baskets, fiber, cordage, and sculptural forms and making jelly from the flowers as well. With a background in gardening, children’s education and public programming and with a passion for accessible, hands-on learning, Beth teaches workshops that invite participants to connect with nature, craft, and place. She is dedicated to reclaiming kudzu as a sustainable material and uses her practice to spark conversations about environmental stewardship and the power of making with one’s hands. |
