I am a mental health nurse, who became a patient, after difficulty with lifestyle choices. One of the positive coping mechanisms I developed during trauma was painting, drawing, etc. Feeling trapped within myself, a constant barrage of loud voices screamed “THERE’S SOMETHING WRONG WITH YOU” in my head. It would have been difficult to retrain my mind, and regain my foothold in sanity without the calm space that art allows me to find comfort in.

My name is Ashley Handy and I am a self-taught collage artist. My work centers around accepting and celebrating those hidden parts of ourselves. When I create a collage, I find connection in the images I lay on the page. As the patterns and the pictures form, I connect with how those symbols and images make me feel; and it expands my knowledge of my innermost self. I believe it is important to both find connection in the world around us and to expand our self-awareness, and it is my hope that my work inspires that in others.

Locally born, I was raised all over the states and finally came home to Fort Payne about eight years ago to raise my son in the place I have always called home. My art work varies depending on the customer. I love doing commissioned pieces and challenging myself. I've done stuff ranging from a beautiful magnolia bloom to a mural of dead pigs for a local slaughterhouse/haunt. I work mainly in acrylics, though I have fun experimenting with other mediums as well. Most of my own work tends to be darker—think Halloween and gore with a touch of sweet and sassy mixed in.

Don began carving in 1995 at Horsin’ Around, the carousel horse carving school in Chattanooga. After carving his own horse, he remained at the school as a volunteer instructor and carved Olivia, the female ostrich on the Coolidge Park Carousel. He soon branched out into walking sticks and canes, Celtic crosses and relief panels, figurines, and cottage signs. Although Don professes not to be a chainsaw carver, he often uses his chainsaw when working on large sculptures before adding detail with hand tools. Now living in Mentone, Don continues to carve whatever he and his clients can dream up.

Born in Bogota, Colombia, from a young age I liked drawing. I'm fascinated by drawing the human figure. After earning a degree in Graphic Design, I studied art and photography. In 2000, I came to live in the US and continued to focus on the human figure, working in ink, watercolor and acrylic. I have taught drawing to elementary age children. I am currently working on a group of paintings that I call (Reflections of Colombia), showing sites and events that are part of the daily life of some Colombians. I like Realism combined with insinuated scenarios.

About 8 years ago, I found myself recovering from heart issues. I was inspired during a local retreat, watching a show about an elderly couple that believed in fairies. I decided I would try to create my own fairy houses and I learned Ilove making all the tiny pieces. Everything is handmade and full of details. I hope everyone can find a little magic in all the houses I create. I do have a Facebook page, make sure you check it out. Seeing them in person, is definitely the only way to see the detail I put in each house.

I was born in Tampa Bay, Florida in 1998 and raised in Fort Payne, Alabama. I am fascinated by the mystery in a person's face. In my work, I attempt to capture the depth of the eyes and gaze, showing the subject's soul and unspoken emotion. I work primarily in acrylic or oil paint and I currently work on my art from home. A few of my influences are Cezanne, Picasso (blue period), and Van Gogh's portraits, along with contemporary artists Elly Smallwood and Thomas Golunski. I study the works of these artists and have also taught myself through practical experience.

I have lived in Fort Payne most of my life. I have found a passion as of late for dye art, learning new methods and try original ideas. It has been such a thrill to dive deep into this art form. Dye art/ Fabric art/ Tie-dying balances the law of geometry with the chaos of dye flow. I also sketch various things, like wildlife, geometric shapes, abstract, etc. most of my sketch usually become fabric designs. I have started a business page on Facebook : Mad Mojo’s creations.

My husband Alan and I moved to Mentone in 2021 and bought the old Crowe farmhouse. My family roots are in the Appalachian mountains. I've always loved craftwork and hearken to those roots by focusing on primitives, or "make dos ", using fabric and paint, as well as incorporating vintage found items in my work, such as old tools and thread spools. "Grace's Daughter " honors my mother, as she passed on her love of handmade Appalachian crafts.

I have lived in Fort Payne for five years and this area speaks to my Appalachian soul. I find so much inspiration here. I create sola wood flower arrangements, decor, and other gifts. Sola wood is a soft wood made from the sola plant. Sola is considered a weed, which makes the sola wood flowers sustainable. They never need to be watered and always maintain their beauty. The only maintenance they may need is the occasional dusting. Dust or don't... we don't judge.

Born in Georgia, raised mostly on Long Island, New York, I came to Mentone from Brooklyn, NY in 2019 as a health crisis turned my life upside-down, to focus on art, take care of myself, and live a peaceful life. I'm most at home creating pencil portraits of people (perhaps turning a snapshot of a lost loved one taken in a messy kitchen into a frame-worthy artwork) but also draw silly cartoons and paint with ink, acrylic, watercolor, nail varnish, found objects, collage... just about anything, on just about anything!

Kevin Watson
Collinsville, AL
marlonandkevin1963@gmail.com 256490-5753
I am Kevin Watson. I have lived on lookout Mountain my whole life in a community called Black Creek near Sand Rock AL. I am so very lucky to have my family as my neighbors and all the support and encouragement they give me. I have no formal training in art. I just got inspired by the tin and wood one day. Now I don’t want to stop doing my art. My medium is rusty tin and wood that has been discarded.
Nature is where almost all my ideas come into play as I begin to cut the tin. I love being in nature seeing its beauty from the smallest creature to the biggest tree. I find that being outside in nature makes me calm and feeds my soul.
What type of art do you consider your work?
Well, I would say it covers many categories from Folk art to Contemporary art depending on my inspiration at the time.
